Reframing Through Interaction

Theoretical Application
These interventions integrate Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT), Narrative Therapy, and Neuroscience to facilitate healing through interaction.
Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT): Negative or "nagging" thoughts are externalized using specific symbols and characterization.
Narrative Art Therapy: The use of flaps and hidden layers allows clients to create an alternate narrative. By introducing counter-imagery, clients can confront or conceal struggles at their own pace, building a more resilient identity.
Neuroscience: Thinking three-dimensionally and physically manipulating the artwork encourages the brain to form new neural connections. This interaction allows clients to view their thought process as a dynamic construction rather than a fixed deficit.
Developing Internal Support: By visualizing an "empathetic audience" within a journal, clients shift away from harsh self-criticism toward a self-compassionate perspective.
Transformative Symbolism: The narrative of failure is shifted to one of creative exploration by turning challenges into symbolic form that the client can control.
Clinical Considerations
When implementing interactive and dynamic interventions, the following must be considered:
Adaptability and Flexibility: This approach can be highly language-driven, game-like, or focused purely on visual character development, making it suitable for a wide range of client needs.
Neurological Engagement: The therapist should assess how the collaborative nature of the intervention affects the client’s social connection and neurological regulation.
Long-Term Continuity: These projects are ideal for weekly check-ins, allowing clients to add "humor" or "visual tension" to their ongoing narratives and build a sustainable internal support system.
Material Metaphor: Tools such as colored pencils can be used to explore "pressure" as a metaphor for emotional friction, helping identify shifts in anxiety levels across sessions.
Artist Statement(s)
“Reframing Through Interaction”
(Mixed Media Collage & Flip Box)
The Concept: By transforming my nagging thoughts into a "flip box," I have turned the internal pressure to conform into an interactive game of protection and recontextualization.
The Narrative: This project turns therapy into a game of strategy, in which I use images with dual meanings to challenge overwhelming thoughts.
The Process:
Image Selection: I chose images representing themes of vulnerability and protection.
Collaborative Interaction: The therapist and I took turns "moving" on the box. When a vulnerable image was presented, a protective counter-image followed.
Reframing: Each flap and layer became a new connection in my mind, allowing me to find deeper meaning through the physical act of "flipping" the story.
“The Procrastination Art Gallery”
(Interactive Art Journal)
The Concept: This journal began as a way to confront the clutter of avoided tasks, transforming the guilt of procrastination into a dynamic gallery of daily life.
The Narrative: Instead of hiding from mundane tasks and little messes everywhere, I visualized the energy tied to them, using actual dust and scraps to represent the reality of my environment.
The Support System: To counter my inner critic, I introduced "supportive audience members" into the pages—characters who sit patiently as I work through my frustration.
The Structure: Unique folds and connected pages demonstrate how my perspective changes as the journal is handled. The final product is not a completed "to-do list," but a reorganized vision of my world viewed through the lens of a gallery opening, reclaiming value from guilt.
